It Is Official - Google Got A Major Hard-on For Wireless Carriers

It didn’t even take 12 hours from my last post about Google’s plans to take on iPhone, telecom carriers and of course Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL. Based on what I was just told by a few friends who work at Google, their company might be able to take on a few the wireless carriers even earlier than I had predicted.

Apparently, Google handed out a new type of smartphone called Nexus One to their employees just a few days ago – Software, Hardware, the Operating Systems and listen to this, the backbone wireless network are all made by Google! Double WOW! So, yes, it will be a Google brand smartphone that could really hurt wireless carriers. It is a good News for us, the consumer regardless. The phone has a larger screen. The touchscreen device uses the new version 2.1 of Google’s Android operating system. Other manufacturers also using Android operating system include Samsung and Motorola, and the DROID on Verizon Wireless last month.

Not quite sure when their phone is going to be released to the market, but certainly, I will stay on top of it and keep you all posted. Watch this News. They have their own carrier as supposed to partnering with an exiting wireless carrier – like T-mobile or Verizon!!! Have no idea how they got their own wireless backbone infrastructure. Will find out.

Byte-Sized: Tasty Tech From Around The Web [Round-up]

The second round of my (hopefully) daily round-up of the tastiest tech stories from Philly and beyond.

Commence the tech!

I’m still getting the hang of this and, at least for a little while, you’re probably going to see a lot of repetition as far as which sites I’m culling these tidbits from.

Also, I hope you like the image — I threw it together this morning from Creative Commons and public domain photos, using a site called SplashUp. It’s the most creative thing I’ve done in months, and that makes me really sad. But enough whining, didn’t I already commence the tech?

Local Bytes

  • Philly.com reports that local venture capital firm TL Ventures, which used its $1 billion to buy little tech companies all over the country in the late 1990s, is attempting to recapture $3 million in fees paid to some of its partners as the fund faces dissolution. (Link)
  • UPenn’s Wharton Business School has a great read about the Comcast-NBC Universal deal. It’s actually a couple days old, but a great read. (Link)

Everything Else

  • CNET’s gadget blog Fully Equipped rounds up 20 of the past decade’s most innovative products in an excellent gallery. (Link)
  • Ars Technica talks about the first couple of levels of Dante’s Inferno, the new video game from Visceral Games based on the famous epic poem by Dante Alighieri. (Link)
  • Engadget reports on Virgin Galactic’s spaceship unveiling. You, too, can go to space for a measly $200,000! (Link)
  • Gearlog posts about one designer’s dream handset, the xPhone, which sports a 48 megapixel camera that accepts add-on lenses, direct-print functionality, a CD-ROM drive, a cassette player, a nuclear battery, and, well, you get the point. (Link)
  • Geek.com tells tales of the upcoming Android OS updates for Verizon’s Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris users. (Link)
  • VentureBeat’s blog DigitalBeat reported on the “collapsed man” caught by Google Maps‘ Street View cameras. Google has since removed the image. (Link)

Motorola Sholes Tablet Sneak Peak

Sholes-Tablet1

Its been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding the infamous Motorola Sholes/ Sholes Tablet, that according to the leak we released appears to be coming to T-Mobile USA. Note this is still classified as a rumor. Courtesy of the folks over at Mobile AndroidChina, we can finally put a face to this mysterious MotoBlur powered handset. Well maybe not a face but a glimpse of it. So far the  specs look pretty impressive, the Sholes Tablet is rumored to pack a 550MHz OMAP TI 3430 processor (identical to that of the Motorola Droid’s), a 3.7″ touch screen, 800 x 480 resolution, HDMI port, 3.5mm headset jack, UMTS/HSPA, and an  8 megapixel camera with  xenon flash to top it off. The Sholes Tablet will come with Android OS 2.0 but by the time this bad boy hits the shelves it might already come preloaded with the yet to be released Android OS 2.1. Larger image after the jump! Don’t forget to express your thoughts in the comments!

Sholes Tablet With Android 2.0, HDMI Smiles for the Camera

A leaked Motorola (s mot) road map showed a Sholes tablet and sure enough, a Sholes tablet has been peeped. That’s the story over at mobile-01 (translated), anyway. Aside from a few partial photos of the alleged keyboard-less Droid, there’s not much new that wasn’t in the road map leak:

  • 854 x 480, 3.7″ capacitive touchscreen
  • 550 MHz TI OMAP 3430 CPU like the Droid, although the processor is capable of 800 MHz clock speeds
  • 8-megapixel camera with Xenon flash
  • HDMI port, 720p playback and DLNA support
  • Android 2.0

Although there’s no slide-out QWERTY, these shots make the handset a little chunkier than I would have expected. If there’s no loss of weight or thickness, I think I’d rather have the hardware keyboard. Boy Genius Report also adds that this handset will tout a GSM/HSPA radio, and not CDMA/EVDO like the Droid, so don’t expect this paternal twin to appear at Verizon (s vz). According the road map — which has been correct so far — this device is due out in the first quarter of 2010.
