It Is Official - Google Got A Major Hard-on For Wireless Carriers

It didn’t even take 12 hours from my last post about Google’s plans to take on iPhone, telecom carriers and of course Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL. Based on what I was just told by a few friends who work at Google, their company might be able to take on a few the wireless carriers even earlier than I had predicted.

Apparently, Google handed out a new type of smartphone called Nexus One to their employees just a few days ago – Software, Hardware, the Operating Systems and listen to this, the backbone wireless network are all made by Google! Double WOW! So, yes, it will be a Google brand smartphone that could really hurt wireless carriers. It is a good News for us, the consumer regardless. The phone has a larger screen. The touchscreen device uses the new version 2.1 of Google’s Android operating system. Other manufacturers also using Android operating system include Samsung and Motorola, and the DROID on Verizon Wireless last month.

Not quite sure when their phone is going to be released to the market, but certainly, I will stay on top of it and keep you all posted. Watch this News. They have their own carrier as supposed to partnering with an exiting wireless carrier – like T-mobile or Verizon!!! Have no idea how they got their own wireless backbone infrastructure. Will find out.

Byte-Sized: Tasty Tech From Around The Web [Round-up]

The second round of my (hopefully) daily round-up of the tastiest tech stories from Philly and beyond.

Commence the tech!

I’m still getting the hang of this and, at least for a little while, you’re probably going to see a lot of repetition as far as which sites I’m culling these tidbits from.

Also, I hope you like the image — I threw it together this morning from Creative Commons and public domain photos, using a site called SplashUp. It’s the most creative thing I’ve done in months, and that makes me really sad. But enough whining, didn’t I already commence the tech?

Local Bytes

  • Philly.com reports that local venture capital firm TL Ventures, which used its $1 billion to buy little tech companies all over the country in the late 1990s, is attempting to recapture $3 million in fees paid to some of its partners as the fund faces dissolution. (Link)
  • UPenn’s Wharton Business School has a great read about the Comcast-NBC Universal deal. It’s actually a couple days old, but a great read. (Link)

Everything Else

  • CNET’s gadget blog Fully Equipped rounds up 20 of the past decade’s most innovative products in an excellent gallery. (Link)
  • Ars Technica talks about the first couple of levels of Dante’s Inferno, the new video game from Visceral Games based on the famous epic poem by Dante Alighieri. (Link)
  • Engadget reports on Virgin Galactic’s spaceship unveiling. You, too, can go to space for a measly $200,000! (Link)
  • Gearlog posts about one designer’s dream handset, the xPhone, which sports a 48 megapixel camera that accepts add-on lenses, direct-print functionality, a CD-ROM drive, a cassette player, a nuclear battery, and, well, you get the point. (Link)
  • Geek.com tells tales of the upcoming Android OS updates for Verizon’s Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris users. (Link)
  • VentureBeat’s blog DigitalBeat reported on the “collapsed man” caught by Google Maps‘ Street View cameras. Google has since removed the image. (Link)

Motorola Sholes Tablet Sneak Peak

Sholes-Tablet1

Its been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding the infamous Motorola Sholes/ Sholes Tablet, that according to the leak we released appears to be coming to T-Mobile USA. Note this is still classified as a rumor. Courtesy of the folks over at Mobile AndroidChina, we can finally put a face to this mysterious MotoBlur powered handset. Well maybe not a face but a glimpse of it. So far the  specs look pretty impressive, the Sholes Tablet is rumored to pack a 550MHz OMAP TI 3430 processor (identical to that of the Motorola Droid’s), a 3.7″ touch screen, 800 x 480 resolution, HDMI port, 3.5mm headset jack, UMTS/HSPA, and an  8 megapixel camera with  xenon flash to top it off. The Sholes Tablet will come with Android OS 2.0 but by the time this bad boy hits the shelves it might already come preloaded with the yet to be released Android OS 2.1. Larger image after the jump! Don’t forget to express your thoughts in the comments!

Sholes Tablet With Android 2.0, HDMI Smiles for the Camera

A leaked Motorola (s mot) road map showed a Sholes tablet and sure enough, a Sholes tablet has been peeped. That’s the story over at mobile-01 (translated), anyway. Aside from a few partial photos of the alleged keyboard-less Droid, there’s not much new that wasn’t in the road map leak:

  • 854 x 480, 3.7″ capacitive touchscreen
  • 550 MHz TI OMAP 3430 CPU like the Droid, although the processor is capable of 800 MHz clock speeds
  • 8-megapixel camera with Xenon flash
  • HDMI port, 720p playback and DLNA support
  • Android 2.0

Although there’s no slide-out QWERTY, these shots make the handset a little chunkier than I would have expected. If there’s no loss of weight or thickness, I think I’d rather have the hardware keyboard. Boy Genius Report also adds that this handset will tout a GSM/HSPA radio, and not CDMA/EVDO like the Droid, so don’t expect this paternal twin to appear at Verizon (s vz). According the road map — which has been correct so far — this device is due out in the first quarter of 2010.

App appeal puts marketers on track

My opinion on the below article:

I found this article really interesting and he uses good examples to support his view point.  The key to this is to remember mobile works best when integrated into traditional media whatever the format.

Mobile applications are just one element to utilise as a marketing channel. At present only iphone applications are offering the rich levels brands would expect and the experience consumers would hope for. The others are some way behind.  Therefore there is limited reach, as in the UK iphone has only 17% handset penetration (much less Globally) with Blackberry slightly higher on 20% and Nokia still dominating with a huge 39% .

In order to maximise the success of any campaign you need to reach the targeted masses; which means you need to consider all platforms and formats whether it is an application, mobile internet site or simple SMS communications (to name but a few).  This always comes back to the key metrics in determining the success of any campaign:

Reach, Targeted, Engagement, Viral-bility and Transactional…..

Does it have reach?  Is it targeted? Is it engaging?  Is it viral? Can you make a sale?

The higher it scores in these areas then the closer you are to running a successful mobile marketing campaign that has delivered recognised measured tangible results.

The below article is by Rik Haslam creative architect at digital agency RAPP.

It’s been a while coming, but mobile applications are beginning to find widespread approval – and generate revenues as a result

mobile marketing consumate consumer article image

A shoo-in: Reebok’s ’shoe modding’ campaign generates more revenues than its website

Clients and colleagues keep asking me if 2010 will be the “year of mobile”, but that rather misses the point. Mobile marketing didn’t start with the iPhone. Many brands have been using it effectively for some time – ring tones, anyone?

What is new, though, is the feeling that mobile is suddenly hot. It’s as if the marketing world has suddenly realised just how many handsets consumers are carrying around. Mobile feels cheap, too, and in the current climate, brands value a low-cost opportunity to connect one-to-one via an ultra-responsive device that is always on and offers direct revenue opportunities – not to mention a means of capturing valuable data. Throw in an “app” and you’ve got your own media channel to boot.

The problem is that many mobile campaigns are crass, intrusive, gimmicky and pretty shallow in terms of emotional engagement. These are not values that too many blue-chip brands want to be identified with. Frankly, many companies have little understanding of how to utilise the unique properties of mobile technology while creating a brand experience that’s compelling to the consumer.

Pioneers

Predictably, perhaps, it took a telecommunications brand to deliver one of the earliest examples of innovative mobile work. Motorola’s Goodbye campaign allowed travellers at Hong Kong airport to take a photo of themselves, add a message to it, and then send it to huge video screens in the main departures hall, where it was displayed to friends, colleagues and family. David Beckham was drafted in for celebrity support, and visitors to the airport received his “goodbye” video message via Bluetooth. That message could then be sent to their loved ones – and tens of thousands were. The campaign not only introduced consumers to new product features, but also generated a huge amount of free publicity for Motorola, which saw a dramatic increase in handset sales.

Since then, there have been countless successful campaigns. One of my favourites is Ogilvy’s work for soft drink Fanta. Its Stealth Sound System campaign was inspired by the “Mosquito” devices used to prevent teenagers hanging around in public spaces – by emitting ultrasonic alarms at a frequency adults can’t hear. The Fanta campaign turned the idea on its head, with an application that allowed teenagers to communicate secretly by downloading words and phrases on the same frequency. The application was downloaded half a million times in the UK and launched globally in July.

It’s one thing to appeal to gadget freaks and teenagers, but to demonstrate enduring success a new technology needs to engage a mass market audience. Earlier this year, Saatchi & Saatchi in Australia used mobile to startlingly simple effect in the UN Voices project. The agency created a campaign of posters and press ads featuring portraits of individuals on the margins of society, accompanied by a simple request: “Listen to me”. Anyone who photographed the lips with a mobile and sent the picture to a listed number received a recorded message from the person featured. Although the calls were harrowing, the campaign was successful in that it made a relatively obscure UN project extremely prominent.

Show me the money

In terms of real success, though, brands like to see a direct correlation between their marketing efforts and their revenue. The Your Reebok application on the iPhone delivers income in spades. Created by Inside Mobile and Agency Mobile, this neat app allows users to design their own trainers and then either order a pair or upload them for others to view and purchase. Launched earlier this year, the application now generates more direct sales for Reebok than its website. That’s the kind of case study other marketers pay attention to.

Several years ago, Blyk announced it was going to revolutionise the mobile market by giving free calls to teenagers who agreed to interact with brand advertising. Although Blyk UK has since changed its business model to focus on operator partnerships (and now works exclusively with Orange in the UK), it has proven that sending timely, relevant messages to young people from brands builds high levels of engagement and illicits high response and action rates.

Motorola Droid: Afterthought

Well, being Black Friday, I went to Best Buy today, and for about 40 seconds,

I held a non-working Motorola Droid hardware model.

Now, this is really what I hate about BestBuy, none of the phones on display work,

so this doesn’t give people a feel of what they’re buying, contrary to an AT&T or Apple Store. (I haven’t said any other names, because I’ve never went into a Verizon, Sprint, etc. store, so I can’t just say they have working models on display)

But I looked at the droid, and it was everything I didn’t excpect.

Screen that ads make look big and really isn’t that huge, check.

Really, really, really terrible feeling keyboard (maybe that’s because it’s a non-work model, but either way I’d be uncomfortable with it), check.

I think I’ll go try my hand with an HTC.. those boys look sweet. The HD2 (which looks the best to me), unfortunately runs Windows Mobile, but hey, hopefully it’s better than the desktop OS. And HTC Sense will probably cover up all the Windows Mobile.

I don’t think you’d find me walking around with a Palm phone, simply because I’m just not that crazy about Palm. The Pre didn’t offer much besides iPhone, but phones like the HD2, offers plenty more to explore, e.g. a 5 MP camera, a huge screen, etc. And no, the DROID’s screen don’t feel that huge because it’s iPhone size. But maybe I just need to spend more time with a real working model of a DROID.

Beber cerveja regularmente reduz o estresse, diz estudo

Motorola Droid In Pictures + LG Chocolate Touch

Ahhhh…more gratuitous shots of Verizon’s Motorola Droid. The handset is very well built, on par or even better than the Motorola CLIQ.For a slider qwerty, it’s super thin. The OS is well made and much more refined in Android 2.0. I expect this phone to be a hot seller and wonder if Motorola is going to let Sprint in on a nice new version Android device?

Is this an iPhone killer? Let me explain something people, NO PHONE is going to be an iPhone killer. Apple set the stage for all of the devices we have seen follow them for the past two years. Is it an upgrade with some kick to an iPhone? You betcha! My friend is replacing his aging Voyager with the Droid tomorrow morning (and he is getting there at six in the morning to make sure he gets his phone).

So I would expect may of you folks to do the same and be found standing in line. If so, shoot us an email at fonefrenzy at yahoo or gmail and I will post them throughout the day.

Today, (Target stores) Bullseye Mobile Solutions (California for now, sorry nation) announced the lowest price so far for the Droid at $199.87, for new activations, with instant MIR. Take that Best Buy and Walmart!

So what are you waiting for? Get the car gassed up, take your thermos and grab your stainless steel, double walled Starbucks coffee cup and get in line!

And here is a shot of the LG Chocolate Touch:

Motorola’s New Fixed Wireless Broadband Solution Enables High-performance Residential Access and Business Connectivity

Point-to-multipoint fixed wireless broadband solution helps service providers and enterprises extend connectivity to unserved and hard-to-reach locations and customers

October 27, 2009

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – October 27, 2009 – The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business unit of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the latest addition to its industry-leading point-to-multipoint (PMP) fixed wireless broadband portfolio – the PMP 430 wireless broadband distribution and access network solution.

Offering increased throughput rates and better range in the 5.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands, this high-performance connectivity solution enables businesses, government agencies and service providers to extend high-speed connectivity to unserved and hard-to-reach locations and customers. The PMP 430 can be co-located with existing Motorola PMP wireless broadband networks to offer service providers greater connectivity from their existing access point locations and is an approved solution for providing broadband connectivity within the guidelines of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“The PMP 430 enables us to expand our network,” said Fergal Kearney, operations manager, Aptus Broadband. “The high throughput, low latency and long range enable us to provide connectivity to a larger number of subscribers in the area, some of which were previously difficult to connect.”

Motorola’s PMP 430 fixed wireless broadband and access network solution features Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplexing (OFDM) tech¬nology to deliver outstanding throughput and long range as well as line of sight (LOS) and near-line of sight (nLOS) performance for reliable and secure data, voice and video connectivity. Offering more than 40 Mbps of total aggregate throughput per access point sector, the system can deliver more than 160 Mbps of throughput from a single tower location to difficult-to-reach subscribers, including those in multipath urban or rural areas. The PMP 430’s higher gain antennas and OFDM technology provide extended ranges of up to 40 miles (64 km) when the subscriber module is configured with a passive LENS or reflector. Motorola’s latest solution also offers low one-way latency of less than 3.5 msec, enabling customers to provide high Quality of Service (QoS) for latency-sensitive voice and video services. The throughput rates of the PMP 430 subscriber modules can be upgraded easily from 4 to 40 Mbps via a software key system to meet customers’ changing bandwidth requirements.

“Service providers and enterprises seek technologies that are field-proven, cost-effective and easy to deploy,” said Tony Cecchin, senior director for global product operations, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “Motorola’s wireless broadband technologies deliver reliable connectivity to millions of business and residential subscribers across the world and the latest PMP 430 solution builds on this experience, offering low latency and flexibility for residential access, leased-line replacement and infrastructure for mesh access networks.”

Motorola relies on a worldwide network of best-in-class partners to deliver enterprise mobility solutions that provide real-time information for better decisions and better results. With a level of industry experience and business acumen that can only be garnered through in-the-field experience, our partners add significant value to enterprise mobility solutions. The PMP 430 wireless broadband distribution and access network solutions are expected to be available worldwide through Motorola channel partners and Motorola sales in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Motorola delivers seamless connectivity that puts real-time information in the hands of users, which gives customers the agility they need to grow their business or better serve and protect the public. Working seamlessly together with its world-class devices, Motorola’s unrivaled wireless network solutions include indoor wireless LAN, outdoor wireless mesh, point-to-multipoint, point-to-point networks and voice-over-WLAN solutions. Combined with powerful software tools for wireless network design, best-of-breed security, management and troubleshooting, Motorola’s solutions deliver trusted networking and access anywhere to organizations across the globe.

IPTV news - New report identifies IPTV market leaders

MRG has released its latest ‘Global IPTV Market Leaders Report’, identifying the top equipment and technology vendors worldwide as of October 2009, with little change in many segments.

The report, which tracks the top 120 IPTV vendors in 24 regional sectors, relates that there are currently more than 800 IPTV services in operation globally, with over 80 new operators starting new services since March 2009, of which most were in North America, Europe and the Rest of World regions.

In the IPTV Access sector, Alcatel-Lucent was found to hold a 51% share of the worldwide access market, as well as furthering its strength as a systems integrator and holding the number two position in the global middleware sector (behind Microsoft).

In the Content Security sector, Verimatrix retains its number one global market ranking, holding a 26% share of the global market (up 2% since March 2009), and with strong positions in all four of the regional markets.

In the Set-top Box sector, Motorola still dominates the global market, according to the report, with a 28% share globally – up 5% since March 2009 – followed by smaller and highly aggressive companies such as Amino, ADB and Netgem. Over 25 companies were found to compete in the STB market worldwide, which often represents over 60% of CapEx for IPTV operations.

In the Video Headend Encoders sector, Motorola also maintains its number one position with a 38% share of the worldwide market, while Ericsson/TANDBERG Television follows strongly with a 34% share (up 3% from March 2009) and is described as “closing the gap” on Motorola in this market sector, where the top five vendors are found to hold about 94% of the global market, leaving only 6% to the other six competitors.

In both the Middleware and Video-on-Demand (VOD) sectors, a crowded field of companies continue to struggle to compete against the Microsoft “juggernaut”, according to the report.

“Significant growth of China’s IPTV subscribers enabled both Huawei and ZTE to improve their rankings in several sectors,” said Jose Alvear, MRG Analyst. “These grew out of new developments at China Telecom and China Unicom as they expanded into different provinces.”

[rm]

Apple Mighty Mouse Product Review

discount mlb jerseys

discount nfl jerseys

With the laptop revolution that has seemed to overtake the at-home computer world in the last few years, innovative technologies to further the convenience of the laptop are more important than ever. One essential tool for laptop users is the wireless mouse, which gives users the familiarity of a typical mouse with the ease of a wire-free setup. Fortunately for the multitude of Mac users who account for a large portion of the laptop computer market, Apple has come out with a wireless mouse that trounces those of their PC counterparts. This handle-held wonder is appropriately named the might mouse and it can be purchased for 69 USD online or in an Apple retail store.

The mighty mouse has multiple features that make it well worth the purchase. Such features set the mighty mouse well above its competitors in the PC world. The Mighty mouse offers extremely concise handling and precision control with its laser-tracking engine. Additionally, the might mouse offers a Bluetooth connection that offers wireless capabilities that stays connected even a room away, up to over thirty feet.

Another attractive feature of the mighty mouse is its AA battery chamber. The mighty mouse seems to run on very little power. One changing of the AA batteries can power your mighty mouse for up to eleven months! And with a power-saving feature that shuts down the mouse when not in use, the owner never has to shut off the mighty mouse to enjoy such optimal power-saving operation.

The mighty mouse also boasts a touch-sensitive technology that finally allows Mac users to right and left click with their mouse. Another handy feature of the mighty mouse is its scroll ball, which is centered on the top of the mouse. This ball allows users to not only scroll up and down, but allows full directional scrolling of 360°. Additionally, pushing on the ball of the mighty mouse opens the Mac's dashboard, a display of extras that can include sports scores, weather, and more.

The final, and possibly most innovative feature of the mighty mouse is the squeezable sides. Squeezing the sides of the mouse shrink all open windows so users can view all of their documents and programs at once on the screen.

When Apple set out to add the wireless mouse to its arsenal of technological goodies, they certainly didn't skimp out. Apple's mighty mouse contains a slew of features including a laser precision engine, optimal battery life, 360° scrolling, Bluetooth wireless connection, and squeezable sides for expose view. All of these amazing features make the Apple mighty mouse the most convenient and powerful wireless mouse available on the market.

Motorola Takes 802.11n Technology Outdoor with Powerful Mesh Wide Area Network Solution

802.11n mesh access points help cities and businesses build a reliable, high-bandwidth wireless network infrastructure to meet growing mobility needs

October 08, 2009

Schaumburg, Ill. – October 8, 2009 – The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the AP 7181 access point, a high-performance, reliable and secure 802.11n outdoor mesh wide area network (MWAN) solution. Offering data speeds of up to 300 Mbps and featuring Motorola’s proprietary ADvanced Element Panel Technology (ADEPT) antenna system, the AP 7181 provides municipalities and enterprise customers with a flexible wireless network solution that supports their current and future data, video and voice needs.

Motorola’s AP 7181 outdoor mesh access points provide more network capacity, enable more applications and support more users than 802.11a/b/g mesh solutions, accelerating return on investment. Motorola’s innovative ADEPT antenna system enables the AP 7181 to achieve maximum performance by communicating two simultaneous data streams in the same channel and avoiding the self-shadowing of typical multi-antenna solutions. With antennas integrated into an aesthetic enclosure, Motorola’s solution overcomes the limitations of multiple antenna sticks in a typical 802.11n access point. Network availability and reliability is further strengthened with 802.11n radios specifically designed by Motorola to maintain full power at high data rates, ensuring enhanced client connections and superior mesh throughput throughout a coverage area.

“Our customers seek solutions that can support a broad range of fixed and mobile applications, from automated meter reading to field mobility to wireless video surveillance,” said Nelson Santos, president, Scientel Wireless. “802.11n mesh networks offer a compelling connectivity option with one infrastructure having enough bandwidth and capacity to support many of these applications simultaneously.”

Motorola’s outdoor mesh solution offers the powerful capabilities of 802.11n technologies, while also maintaining backward compatibility and improving performance for 802.11a/b/g clients, which helps customers maximize their existing mobility investments. The AP 7181 access point offers robust mobile data connections throughout a network by leveraging Motorola’s MeshConnex™ routing technology to enable efficient routing, low hop latency, low routing overhead, high-speed handoffs and proven scalability. The field-proven MeshConnex technology allows the AP 7181 to maintain a continuous video connection to or from a moving vehicle or train, enabling video surveillance in real time. Municipal and enterprise customers can also leverage these mobility features to deliver high-speed Internet access to mobile workers who need to stay connected to key office applications while in the field.

Municipalities are increasingly looking to wireless broadband technologies to help them save money and enhance city services with advanced mobility applications that include e-citations, automated meter reading, intelligent traffic systems or wireless video security for public safety. The increased data rates and network capacity delivered by the Motorola AP 7181 solution enable municipal customers to leverage a single private wireless network to support a wide range of mobility applications while offering WiFi access to residents and businesses. Businesses and education institutions are also finding an increasing need for mobile access across campus environments, seeking solutions that can offer superior throughput and stronger backhaul connections while delivering reliable and secure coverage using fewer access points. The AP 7181 offers organizations involved in the education, transportation and industrial markets a cost-effective wireless broadband solution that has enough capacity, power and throughput to support even the most bandwidth-demanding applications like video and voice.

“Working with municipal and enterprise customers across the globe, Motorola has a long history of delivering innovative solutions that enable them to leverage mobility applications to help streamline operations, increase worker safety and improve productivity,” said Scott French, MSSI vice president and senior sales director for emerging technologies and solutions, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “Motorola’s high-capacity, high-throughput 802.11n mesh solution will enable customers to future-proof their network infrastructure investments to support both current as well as future application needs.”

Customers can leverage wireless network design and management solutions from the Motorola One Point Wireless Suite to ensure faster deployment, maximum network performance and reduced network maintenance costs. The recently introduced Motorola BroadbandPlanner is an intuitive software solution that helps customers propose, design, deploy and measure outdoor 802.11n mesh wireless networks. With an advanced RF modeling engine, ability to export design information to Google Maps for easy viewing, and streamlined measurement and verification capabilities, this innovative solution helps customers propose wireless network solutions with confidence and deploy them with maximum efficiency.

Once deployed, the 802.11n mesh wide area network can be accurately monitored, managed and optimized using the Motorola Wireless Manager. Offering network administrators a visualization of their entire outdoor and indoor wireless network through a Google Map view, this comprehensive management solution makes it easy to manage the complexities of a multi-layer wireless network by clearly showing performance metrics, network relationships and locations of all wireless elements.

Customers can purchase the AP 7181 mesh solution beginning in the fourth quarter of 2009.

– Read For Weeks On A Single Charge: Kindle’s electronic ink display sips battery power so users can read for over two weeks with wireless turned off and up to four days on a single charge with wireless on.

– Read-To-Me: With the experimental Text-To-Speech feature, Kindle can read most newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud.

– Automatically Syncs With Kindle and Kindle Compatible Devices: Amazon’s “Whispersync” technology automatically syncs customers’ last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across Kindle with U.S. & International Wireless, Kindle with U.S. Wireless, Kindle DX, and Kindle compatible devices like Kindle for iPhone.

In an effort to gain back some of the revenues lost by piracy, many of the world's biggest music producers have signed agreements with Vodafone to allow a digital music service that has no restrictions or limits. The new service will give customers access to over one million songs and will allow Vodafone to sell the music without the anti-piracy protection software known as digital rights management (DRM) (source: tech.yahoo.com).

Several marquee names in the music business such as Universal Music Group, EMI Music and Sony Music Entertainment are already said to be signed and on board with the plan. Vodafone is also currently in talks with Warner Music Group which would allow for even more music to be made available once an agreement has been reached (source: tech.yahoo.com).

Vodafone says the deal will enable DRM-free music to be sent to any digital device such as a computer or a cell phone. From there, the user can opt to put the music onto any portable device such as an iPod if that is their desire. The catch is that the device has to be registered to the Vodafone customer. This will eliminate file sharing that could cut into the already shrinking revenue stream quite considerably (source: tech.yahoo.com).

In the past, the music industry has relied on DRM anti-piracy software to help fight against piracy. But facing sharply declining sales of digital music, the music industry is now ready to remove the software in an effort to increase sales (source: tech.yahoo.com).

With the new deal, customers will be able to choose from over one million tracks from names such as Coldplay, Duffy and a multitude of others. Customers will be able to get as many songs as they desire with no limits or restrictions, all for the same price. While there is no mention of any firm numbers of that price, Vodafone does say that pricing will depend upon region (source: tech.yahoo.com).

As the old saying goes, “If you can't beat them, join them.” This is the angle that the music industry now finds itself having to take as the only other alternative is to continue to take in anemic revenues. In other words, something is always better than nothing and the music industry unfortunately has to wake up to that cold reality. As for the consumer, the new plan will allow great flexibility, freedom and the peace of mind that comes with downloading songs that you know won't contain any viruses or malware.

Want to see what a rip-off the Olympics would have been? Check out CPS boss Huberman's deal with Motorola.

Talk about dodging a bullet. Chicagoans in the neighborhoods are breathing a little easier this afternoon, now that the IOC decided to screw Rio instead of Chicago.

While boss Daley swore it wouldn’t cost the people of Chicago a dime, who really believed that story.

We see a little taste of what would have been in today’s Sun-Times story on CPS school boss Ron Huberman and his sweetheart deal with Motorola. Millions of dollars for stuff we didn’t want and never got.

Chicago schools chief Ron Huberman — Mayor Daley’s former corruption-fighting chief of staff — is being accused of a “significant management failure” that set the stage for alleged contract irregularities at the city’s 911 center that cost taxpayers $2.25 million.

In an explosive new report, the city inspector general’s office characterizes Huberman as so derelict in the oversight of a contract with Motorola while he was executive director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications that he should be suspended if he still worked for the city.

The Real Cost of Owning a Smartphone. Who Wins?

Smart phones are selling like crazy. It seems almost every week a new smartphone is announced. With the proliferation of the smart phone market in the last two years since the original iPhone launch, and several new phones featuring better processors like the Snapdragon and NVIDIA Tegra, smartphones are becoming more like mobile do-it-all computers than the cell phones of yesterday.

You have the Blackberry, iPhone, HTC G1, Nokia E71x and of course, the Palm Pre. The phones and plans associated with them do vary greatly and it would be beneficial for your to do your research before you make that two year commitment in purchasing a very costly service. For some of you, the need for owning one is easily convinced, for others it may take more time.  For some like me, this may be the only phone you now own and did away with your land line years ago.

A great article was written by PC World examining the costs associated with the cost of ownership for a smartphone. Hit the link to read.

Motorola CLIQ Preview

Boy Genius received an early review unit of the new Motorola CLIQ running MOTOBLUR. BG has always been a Blackberry fan and he has good reason to do so. But after spending some time with the new CLIQ at the Mobilize 09, I would have to disagree with several of his points.

First point is the keyboard. BG stated “The buttons are hard, cheap plastic, and while there is some tactile feedback when you press a single key, it doesn’t “bounce” back up and it’s a little unsettling.” This is simply not true. Compared to the Blackberry Bold, the keys feel much more solid and tactile feedback is superb.

Second part that bothered me was this comment: “It seems decently solid, albeit a little cheap.” This is just not true. Several bloggers standing around one of the units we got to play with said that the handset was one of the more solid built devices we have held.

Once we receive our review unit, we plan on doing a complete walk-through of the day to day apps that most people use and give you our opinions of the device.

Customer Reviews
“Motorola H15 Review”
I have been using my Moto HS805 for several years now.

I loved being able to use a AAA battery but hated the size.

I bought the H15 and I love it!

The sound is clearer than the HS805.

When I’m driving with my windows down, I don’t hear that

tell-tale hiss; neither do the people I am speaking to.

It’s so light, I sometimes forget I’m wearing it.

I did buy the H12 from Costco a few months back;

Hated It!

I would recommend this headset to anyone using Bluetooth;

especially in California where it is now LAW to use a

Bluetooth headset while driving!!!

Bought something other than a Motorola phone

I broke my heart this week.  Bought a cell phone other than a Motorola.  For 25 years, in good times and bad, I always bought Motorola.   As I reminded my son,  the Motorola phones put him through college etc.

But there was nothing to buy at either Verizon or AT&T.  A sad state of affairs for the company and people who really helped make it happen.  I remember in 1984, walking around with a portable.   While I thought people would be amazed, for the most part they were ambivalent.  Didn’t see why anyone would want a portable cell phone.

Anyhow, it’s a different world now.  I need to move on.  But, it’s a sad world when “What you never thought possible” is gone.

Eco-Friendly Phones

I really appreciate cell phone manufacturers and carriers starting to pick up on the green trend. We are starting to see many phones today which are being made out recycled materials. Even product packaging is being made from recycled materials and are using soy based inks. Some carriers, like T-Mobile, are even enticing their customers to conserve resources by charging for paper print outs of their monthly bills. In hopes that customers will choose to have their bills delivered by email. Effectively cutting back on waste. Now a days though, there really are few reasons to continue to have your bill printed out. Most phones will allow you to access your account and make payments to it.

Some of the latest phones leading the green trend are the Motorola Renew, Samsung Blue Earth and the Reclaim. Both are really good looking phones packed with great features. The Blue Earth has touch screen with a customizable home screen. This phone still does not have US carrier. And there is no word on price or availability. I personally am really looking forward to this release.

The Samsung Blue Earth will have a built in solar cell on the back side. It will take about a total of 14 hours of sunlight for about 4 hours of use. The phone however, will still use a standard charger. The phone itself is made up mostly of recycled water bottles. And it’s components are for the most part recyclable. The phone has an energy saving mode that allows you to easily adjust the screen brightness. This mode also maintains bluetooth power usage down to a minimum.

The new Samsung Reclaim is the latest eco-friendly phone. It’s available thru Sprint and is only $49.99 with contract. This is a slider phone with a full querty keyboard. Available in green and blue. It is also made from recycled plastics and Samsung along with Sprint, promise that $2 from each the sale of each phone will go to The Nature Conservancy.

These phones are packed with most of the same capabilities as most other phones. So why not go for the eco-friendly option?

Motorola phoenix spreads its wings

Motorola has come in for a lot of stick over recent years: some justified, some not. Some of it seemingly because they had a handset which endured well, if inexplicably.

But after several shaky and quiet months which even included whispers that they might be going under altogether, Motorola have struck back, opened up, and begun to hold hands with important people. Were they ever really that concerned? Who knows?

Aided by an internal reshuffle, the last few weeks have witnessed a range of announcements showing them to be far from dead and buried, not stuck in the past, eyes wide open.

Wide open to the consumer market through an interesting new open source Android powered device, the Dext, which arguably marks a small departure from the hardware design obsession. At least in that market. Should we get over the fact that the vast majority of handsets will look essentially similar for the foreseeable future?

Over simplistic perhaps, (I’m no fashionista) but how much further can we expect to go without a truly radical departure? It’s what on the inside that counts now, and how easy it is to drive.

And the new handset is promising that, with the open Android platform propping the door open for ideas to collide and merge. This has led to the Dext (or CLIQ, in North America) enjoying clever new “Motoblur” software, which synchronises content from apps and third parties.

A cultural openness means Motorola also critically appreciate enterprise solutions and mobile software providers, that less glamorous counterpart to sizzling consumer devices, applications and all that shouty hype.

Motorola’s MC9500 rugged mobile computer has been launched in Europe today to predictable fanfare claims that it IS the future: new capabilities such as modular 3.5G WAN, superior performance, state-of-the-art-design, a revolutionary backroom management system, and much MUCH more (reuters link). (Ok, a bit of shouty hype there too then).

Motorola MC9500 - sings, dances, looks funny

But by producing such transparently developed hardware, as well as embracing and partnering independent software vendors, Motorola demonstrate an open and deep commitment to innovative, multi-pronged progression.

Men in fleet vans across Britain who proffer clunky looking smart devices which record your meters, accept your signatures, take your money to cashpoints, track locations and transmit data back in forth: we may pass them by and crinkle our noses at their weirdly shaped, cumbersome looking bricks – but their blocks of technology can pack in much more than ours, and have significantly more value to their employers.

Motorola and a select few other device manufacturers realise this. That’s why they’re steadily creating formal partnerships with the specialist software vendors who create the bespoke programmes which sit on the hardware.

Just as operators have realised the power of the independent app developer in the consumer space, so device makers have become sensitive to those ostensibly tricky to decipher software houses which make unique mobility programs for industry.

Your handset makers and your operators want as much software and as many applications as possible. It all means data, GPRS, GPS, 3G, whichever: which means money.

Collaborating to innovate has never been as much of a necessity, or as transparently prioritised by the big name hitters as it is today. Motorola are back, speading their wings widely to make serious ground across different channels. For successful development and meaningful innovative progress, they just need everybody to hold hands with everybody else.

Motorola Cliq, announced heading to T-Mobile

Well yesterday Motorola took a giant, conceptual at least, grab at pulling themselves out of the grave the industry has dug for them.

Welcome the Motorola Cliq (known about the blogosphere as the Morrison).

First the specs:

  • T-Mobile USA will release it here in the states “this fall”
  • In fact it looks as if the phone will retail for $399 off contract, or FREE on a 2yr contract.
  • Full Touchscreen with FULL QWERTY side slider
  • 3.2″ capcitive, GLASS, 320 x 480 pixel screen
  • Android 1.5 (Cupcake) with the MOTO Blur custom UI
  • 5MP camera with auto-focus
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • MicroSD up to 32GB support
  • 1420 mAh battery
  • Syncs contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more—from sources such as Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail™, work and personal e-mail, and LastFM
  • Five homescreen widgets to keep you always in-the-know: Happenings, Messages, Social Status, News Feeds, Calendar
  • MOTO Blur account allows you to back up your contacts/data, find a lost phone and easily integrate your existing contact info for friends/family/business

T-Mobile already has a promotional website up for the phone. On it you’ll find information and an interactive demo of the MOTOBlur UI. Click here for the fun.

Blur is Motorola’s custom UI, similar to HTC’s Sense UI, but it is also a service that allows users to pull all their social networking sites into one account. Blur features five home screens (please take note of this Google and include this in Donut or Eclair) and custom Motorola widgets.  As noted, Blur is a system to take all your contacts from social sites and the phone book and keep them in one place, similar to WebOS’s “Synergy” system but then to take that social information from inside various, different apps and place it all out on the homescreens. The ideas, in concept, are great but the execution, as always, will be key here.

Also related, engadget.com has a nice comparison of all the Android devices on the market right now, check the link for the full story. However, the guts of the story is this; there is not a lot of difference between the phones in terms of hardware. In fact they all run the same processor. The minor differences are in the RAM (with the exception of the G1 they all have the same ROM), camera resolution and the headset jack. The differences really come down to the software and keyboard solutions.

Now some videos, courtesy of phonedog.com

I will say that T-Mobile has really gone for the kill shot in terms of Android. They are pushing three android phones, two of which are viable and exciting. I peronally like the myTouch. I’m hoping that Donut and Eclair will be bringing a lot of the features popping up in sens and Blur to the stock version of android. I do really wish T-Mobile had invested in the 288MB RAM version of the Magic/myTouch. All the new phones are sporting 256MB and it really shows. The 192MB on the myTouch isn’t a death blow by any means but why start out behind the curve.

The Cliq is shaping up to be a very nice device. This is what the G1 should have been, at least in terms of form factor, and we’ll see how well it sells. But if T-Mobile really offers the device for free on a new contract they may finally have a true and relevant iPhone competitor.
